Annual Awards Function

Each year Port Stephens Veterans & Citizens Aged Care hold an annual Staff Awards Ceremony.

Newcastle University Scholarship

Port Stephens Veterans & Citizens Aged Care Retirement Village established this scholarship in 1989 in support of 2nd or 3rd year students in the Bachelor of Nursing. Two scholarships valued at $1,000 each will be awarded, one to the highest overall achiever who resides in the Port Stephens Shire and one to the second highest overall achiever who likewise resides in the Port Stephens Shire.

The scholarship is available to any student at the University who meets the following criteria:

  1. is enrolled in the 2nd or 3rd year of the Bachelor of Nursing
  2. is enrolled fulltime or part time
  3. is an Australian Citizen or permanent resident
  4. shall not have previously received this scholarship
  5. the student shall reside in the Port Stephens Shire

Jean Straker Award

Bob Straker a resident of our Retirement Village donated $10,000 ($1,000 per year over 10 years) which is to be known as the “Jean Straker Awards”. The McClelland Family has since donated a further $5,000 to extend the award over 15 years.

This award is for Enrolled Nurses and Assistants in Nursing who have been employed at Port Stephens Veterans & Citizens Aged Care Nursing Home for at least 12 months (full time, part time, casual). The successful candidate will be selected by the Nursing Staff (RN’s, EN’s and AIN’s).

The basis of selection will be the person displaying the most devotion to care and the most compassionate attitude towards our residents in the Nursing Home.

Bob and his wife, Jean, who resided in the Nursing Home until her death in 2001, devoted their lives to nursing care. Jean practiced as a Registered Nurse and Bob was an Administrator in Nursing of a large hospital.

Legacy Scholarship

Port Stephens Legacy has been generous in their support of Port Stephens Veterans & Citizens Aged Care by providing an annual donation of $1,000.00 to assist a staff member with their continuing education and advancement within the organisation.   Applications are voluntary and submitted to the General Manager for consideration by the staff member’s supervisor.

Men of League Scholarship

2013 the Men of League Foundation offered their support of Port Stephens Veterans & Citizens Aged Care by providing the inaugural Men of League Scholarship which is $1,000.00 donation to assist a staff member with their continuing education and advancement within the organisation. Applications are voluntary and submitted to the General Manager for consideration by the staff member’s supervisor.

Service Badges

Each year staff who have been employed at Port Stephens Veterans & Citizens Aged Care for 5, 10, 15 or 20 consecutive years receive a badge in recognition of their long term commitment to Port Stephens Veterans & Citizens Aged Care as an organization and to the residents of our facilities.
